GoTo Redirect’ Issue
Decoding Google Redirect Links

Decoding standard Google redirect links like google.com/goto

A client messages you mid-panic. They hovered over their own listing in Google Search and saw a strange google.com/goto link instead of their homepage URL. Hacked? Penalized? Neither. Here is what is actually happening behind that one moment, and the five things worth knowing before you reply.

500–1,000

Requests / Report

A rank tracker now needs just 500–1,000 requests to resolve one five-page ranking report. Source: Ranking industry analysis, ppc.land.

01

What the GoTo Link Actually Is

Google has started routing some search result clicks through a Google-owned address, google.com/goto, before sending the visitor to the real page. Nothing about the destination changes. The visitor still lands on the client's site, on the same page, in the same time. What changes is what shows up on hover or in the page's source code: a Google address with an encoded hash instead of the clean destination URL.

✦ What Google Actually Said

"We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users."

— Source: Google spokesperson, confirmed to Search Engine Land
02

Why It Looks Like a Hack (But Isn't)

Three things make this look alarming without an SEO background. The hover preview no longer shows their own URL. The destination sits behind a hash instead of readable text. And there is a brief extra step before the page loads. None of that is malware or a broken canonical tag, it just looks exactly like those problems from the outside.

Quick Diagnostic: Google GoTo vs. Malicious Redirect
Feature / Metric Google GoTo Redirect (Safe) Malicious Redirect / Hack (Danger)
URL Origin Starts strictly with google.com/goto Uses lookalike or unknown domains
Destination Page Lands on the exact, correct target page Lands on spam, ads, or phishing pages
Referrer Signal Passes https://www.google.com/ cleanly Strips referrer or passes unknown domain
Behavior Across Devices 100% consistent across all devices Erratic, device-specific, or unpredictable
Action Needed None (Do not edit site code) Clean infected files, restore site backup
How to Tell It's Really Google
✓
The link starts strictly with google.com, never a lookalike domain
✓
It stays consistent across every browser and device
✓
It always resolves to the correct destination page, every time

The redirect itself is nothing new, the 302 status code it uses for "moved temporarily" has existed since HTTP/1.0 was first specified in 1996.

03

What to Check Before You Reply

Skip the urge to change anything on the website itself. Pull baseline traffic from Google Search Console and Google Analytics from before the change spread widely, then compare organic sessions against the weeks after. If those numbers hold steady, the client's visibility is fine, only the raw link format changed. It is also worth a quick message to whichever rank tracking tool the client uses, since some tools are still adjusting to the new format, which can show up as a misleading dip in reported rankings even when actual visibility has not moved.

04

The One Rule Worth Repeating to Every Client

Do not add a redirect, touch the robots.txt file, or edit a canonical tag in response to this. The wrapper lives entirely on Google's servers, before the click ever reaches the client's site, so there is nothing on their end to fix. Site-side changes made for a problem that does not actually exist tend to create the very issues clients were originally worried about.

Explaining the GoTo Link Without the Panic

Explaining a change like this clearly, without triggering a panic or an unnecessary site overhaul, is a small moment that says a lot about a freelancer's judgment. It is exactly the kind of calm, accurate client handling that freelancers on Serpworks are vetted for, grounded in what is actually happening instead of what merely looks alarming.

100%

Focus on Real Impact

True SEO guidance focuses on verified visibility and actual user behavior, ensuring site owners never waste resources resolving issues that do not exist.
